We have the power to change the world, and it’s really easy. Don’t believe me? Read on…
First, let’s talk about your money. Every time you pay your money into a bank, or keep your savings there, that balance becomes available for the banks to use as they see fit.
Fair enough right? After all, they’re paying you the square root of nothing in interest. But at least your account is “free”.
[Side note – there is literally no such thing as a “free” bank account – someone somewhere is paying the price for running your free bank account. And chances are it’ll be someone less fortunate than you, being hit with massive overdraft interest or fees for popping negative. That’s how those “free” accounts are funded].
Anyway, I digress. So, the bank has your money, pays you nearly no interest, and invests your money to make money for themselves. And we all willingly allow them to do this. Bonkers!
But, some banks are mean, naughty, selfish organisations, and literally all they care about is making more money.
They’ll invest in fossil fuel projects [which are killing our home….], the arms industry [killing our fellow humans], animal agriculture [killing, well, erm, animals], deforestation, tobacco, gambling, and who knows what else.
But they can only do that if they have our money; no money, no investments.
Now I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my money anywhere near anything that causes such harm, no matter the “return on investment”. There are so many more important things than money.
Unless of course you’re a capitalist.
So how do you know who’s good and who’s bad?
Great question, thanks for asking! Some very clever people over at Bank.Green have crunched the numbers and done all the digging. And then they made it really easy too – it’ll take less than 20 seconds to check out your bank – go on, do it now, I’ll wait…
Looked yet…?
Horrified? Good. So what can we do?
Search, switch, shout.
Use Bank.Green’s handy dial to find a better bank. Switch to that bank. Then make sure you tell all your friends, family, colleagues, neighbours, that bloke down the pub who gives out all the great (and always, always terribly wrong) tax advice after a couple of pints.
Money talks. And where you put your money has a massive impact. You deserve to know what these organisations are doing with your hard-earned cash. So find out, and if you don’t like what you see, take action.
Put your money where your mouth is!
Don’t want to kill the planet? Then don’t invest in that destruction. Bank.green have made it so easy for us to find out what’s going on, and when you know, you can make the change.
So, send a message to the bankers that they cannot use your money to destroy our only home. Switch to a better bank. Then change the world – easy!
And never forget, HSBC is a four letter word.
